BOROBUDUR & PRAMBANAN / YOGYAKARTA , INDONESIA   

On our way to Bali we made a short stop in Yogyakarta to see the impressive Borobudur and Prambanan Temples. When planning our travel, we checked Lonely Planet who marked these temples as Indonesian must-see spots. We took the train from Jakarta to Yogya; it was an 8-hours trip, but it was worth it. The landscape was so beautiful that we didn’t feel the time pass.

We spent 3 nights at the EDU Hostel in Yogya (find out more here). As soon as we have arrived, we left our bags in the room and we went down to have dinner. There was a street full of all kind of restaurants, so we had lot of choices. After walking around the area, we ended up in a Mexican restaurant. It was funny to experience the Indonesian concept of Mexican food. When we came back to the hotel, we booked a private driver to visit the temples the next day.

At 7:00 am, our driver picked us at the entrance of the hotel. Toppan was a gentle and nice guy.  He explained us lots of stories about the country. I was impressed by his knowledge of the country and his history. We were lucky because nowadays it’s rare to find someone like him. Once at Borobudur we visited the temple and its amazing surroundings. The architecture and the landscape were worth getting up early. It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen! The monument consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular. The temple is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. It is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and also the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.

After visiting Borobudur we stopped to have lunch at Kali Opak Resto, which was a restaurant with an awe-inspiring view (find out more here). The food was so delicious that I still remember the taste of those chicken wings I had. After eating we went to Prambanan. The temple was impressive. It is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. We rented bikes to go for a tour around the temples. It was funny, we enjoyed it. There was also a big park of beautiful deer. I loved to feed them. While visiting Prambanan’s temple, we were still caught by the beauty of Borobudur. It would be difficult for me to choose between this one and Borobudur. If I had to choose one, I would choose both.  

At the end of the day we were exhausted but grateful for all the memories and images that we had in our minds!

  7. This seems to be one of the most renowned buddha temple . I am definitely going to visit here when I go to Indonesia. How much time should I allocate for an easy trip? I don’t want to get super exhausted end of the day

  19. Yogyakarta looks beautiful. Indonesia is so much more than Bali and needs to be explored in greater depth. the Borobudur Temple is impressive and looks incredibly peaceful. Your photos truly show the happiness you feel while you travel and that is really contagious 🙂

  21. Loved the pics! You have an eye for the finer details. I think you should plan a visit to Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho next. They bear a close resemblance to the Borobudur temples. We feel you’d love it! (Ambuj Saxena)

  25. I hadn’t included visiting temples these in our itinerary for SE Asia and I beginning to think I need to revise it and see if we can! Looks spectacular!
