MOUNT BROMO
I still remember the first time I saw MOUNT BROMO’s pictures. I was like “No way I’m going to hike it”. When planning Indonesia’s trip, my Boyfriend was super excited to go to see MOUNT BROMO’s active volcano.
So right after visiting Yogyakarta’s temples, we found a good offer in the hostel for hiking Mount Bromo. We decided to book it. The next morning a bus that takes around one day to get to Probolinggo, the closer city to the volcano, picked us up in the hostel.
After a meandrous journey shared with a group of French students we arrived to Probolinggo. A very weird man appeared in the bus to tell us that we had to take our bags and change to another bus. We had no idea about what was happening. In that moment I was confused, I had a very bad feeling about it. Moreover I was super tired, and all I wanted was to sleep. Before changing buses they took us to a weird office to explain us the details of the trip to the volcano. After that we took the second bus to Sidoajo Pejarakan, where our guest-house was. We had only 2 hours to sleep. We used that time to rest rather than sleeping to prepare for our adventure which started early in the morning at 3am. It was freezing and I had no warm clothes, so I put on my man’s jacket. My outfit was a complete mess.
Afterwards we directly jumped into the jeep to get into the sunrise point. We enjoyed the traffic jam. It was crazy to see hundreds of jeeps and people .As there were so many tourists trying to get to Mount Bromo for the sunrise. Honestly it was well worth It. Watching the sunrise in that spot was magic, I will never forget that view.
After experiencing the sunrise we went back into the jeep and head towards the creature. I highly recommend you guys to ask the driver to stop along the way as you honestly will think you are on the moon. Meanwhile we took a short stop, it was just a great location to jump right to take in the amazing surroundings that was truly breathtaking. We found ourselves presented with horses, not what I was expecting but yes horses! There was 2 ways to get to the top a horse ride or on foot. But we decided to walk.
As we approached the volcano and the well-trodden path turned into a set of steps. I recommend you to turn around and take a look at the view it was incredible, plus it gave us an opportunity to get our breath back. I truly enjoyed walking across the sand sea, by passing the Hindu temple, and climbing up a set of stairs to the crater opening.
Therefore being there was about to be awe in nature’s best combination of beauty and danger, an active volcano that could be so foreboding and desolate yet so beautiful. The view itself was almost out of this world and the reason enough to go there.
It took us 1 to 2 hours hike to summit the caldera of Mount Bromo, which stands tall at 2329 m is the most iconic and the most hiked mountain in Indonesia. It beckons majestically despite having the entire top blown off and with a crater inside that keeps spewing off white sulphurous smoke.
Sitting at 7,000 feet watching an active volcano spewing smoke into the air took my breath away, hearing that sound of volcano that was coming from the bottom so strong, it was like the earth talking to us, proving that nature is truly powerful, I was very impressed by the beauty and in the same time the danger of the mother nature, I will never ever forget about the feeling I had, i even cried while capturing that views and listening that sound. I had so many questions in my mind for instance how could this be real?! I was speechless, I really can’t describe it, I think everyone must go and see that marvelous place.
I didn’t want to leave that incredible creature but we had to go back. While walking back down the steps as we left we got a better view of the temple at the bottom of the volcano.it worth it taking a look around, I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to go and appreciate that beauty.
After the unforgettable experience we had, it was time to come back to our cute guest house in Anda Memasuki, to have breakfast, and to Java and discover the other islands of Indonesia.
Therefore all I can say is that BROMO is a place where a natural beauty meets culture and history!

OMG!!! The photos are out of this world. I always had different imagination for Indonesia. Mainly beaches and wild tropical forest, but this has changed my perception. Keep up with the great work

Mt Bromo looks definitely amazing, a surreal place… until you see all that crowd of tourists… It’s such a pity places like this became “industrialized” for tourism..

Just getting there sounds like an adventure in itself. Mont Bromo looks breath taking and something I would love to hike. Thank you for sharing all your pictures, it looks amazing, but I-m sure the pictures don’t do justice to the real thing

I love seeing blogs and videos on people hiking up volcanos, there’s such a risk and mystery about it, I’ve really wanted to go and hike through NZ’s volcanic area but injury has dampened that spirit 😦

Amazing photos and I can see how it would have been such a highlight for you. 2 hour hike is not so bad. Was its very steep or difficult? I love hikes and we travel with our daughter so would be good to know if suitable for kids.
