INDONESIA, TRAVEL / 30 JULY 2016
KETUT LIYER HOUSE
Let me explain you how I felt in love with Bali.
It all started with the movie Eat Pray Love when Julia Roberts set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.
Since the moment I saw the movie, Bali became a dream, or in other words a goal to achieve in my life. The story really touched me, it was so inspiring and empowering, not only for me but I’m sure it did the same for so many people around the world.
In fact I even wrote it down in my notebook for so many years .Eat, Pray, Love firmly put Bali on my map of dream destinations. And six years later, I finally ventured to the island I had read so much about.
the 30 July 2016 after visiting Pura Tirta Empul, and the Rice terrace Tegalalang we went searching for the Ketut Liyer house, it wasn’t that easy to find, first we stopped at Ketut House which wasn’t the one I was looking for, so we just stopped by and had an ice cream in the top of the restaurant it was good, after that I asked the receptionist for the main place and finally he showed us the right way.
Oh my god I can’t describe you how excited I was!!,I can’t explain you the feeling I had. I was super happy waiting to get there. Finally we arrived and we found a couple that reached before us. ketut Liyer, an elderly Balinese medicine man who lives in Ubud, was reading the girl’s palm, i was little bit nervous when i saw it.
When my turn came, the man promptly asked me to pay 350,000 rupiah (about 30euros) for a palm reading. Which felt a little… presumptuous, to be honest. I didn’t pay because I didn’t want to know my future. When I laid eyes on Ketut he was exactly as I had imagined; a small, wizened Balinese man with a broad smile and only a few teeth.
After a brief wait, Ketut held my palm in his hand and the first thing he told me was that i had a handsome boyfriend!!, that was funny, but I was like I’m I here to read my palm or to tell me about my boyfriend 😀 .
Then he gave me a nearly identical fortune. “You are beautiful. You lucky, you have much success.” That moment made my day, you could see happiness all over my face, I didn’t want to leave that place but I had to continue my trip exploring other marvelous places of Bali.
What I’m trying to say is that despite a few disappointments, my Eat, Pray, Love fantasy totally came true.
I hope you enjoyed reading my story; I will keep you updated with my adventures. Xoxo

Haha, it’s funny how we picture things isn’t quite how they turn out – but I’m glad you got to have that “fortune telling” experience in Bali. I’ve been, haven’t read the book, and my experience was also not what I expected, lol. I am determined to go and experience it differently again! Loved the photos, especially the one of the man holding your palm face up!

30 euros? That’s daylight robbery! I kinda feel upset now that they have commercialized this because of the book and the movie.

I haven’t seen the movie but I did read the book a few year ago when I was in college. Greet to know that you were able to relive the palm reading. Your pictures just showcases how the place was so serene!

Looks like an amazing trip. I just wrote on someone else’s blog about how I haven’t traveled outside the US in years. What things I’m missing out on! I wish I could just take adventure trips like the one you’ve shown!
I recently started working on Personal Development and this book is on my list. I saw the movie years ago, but am wondering now, should I read the book and then see the movie again or the other way around?
Thanks for posting!
